Bigger picture: World in transition

We are on our way to a world in which sustainable design and fashion will make the difference. Today it is Spring. Spring of this global movement. Seeds we have planted before are starting to grow and opening up. We are opening up physically and mentally. Aim of Hiphonest.com is to show you some stunning examples in sustainable fashion and design. And inspire you to open-up.

Why Hiphonest design?
After seeing documentaries like Manufactured Landscapes, 11th hour and China Blue… Hearing the bad news about global warning, child-labour, running out of natural resources, damage to ecosystems and loss of biodiversity… We realize : ‘We are in this world together!’ Fortunatelly more and more conscious people start to slow down and start asking questions.
Hiphonest design is a general reaction to this global “environmental and economic crisis’. It is the art of designing economic, social, and ecologically sound products. Hiphonest design ranges from designing small objects for everyday use, through designing buildings, gardens and cities. This is a difficult process, but step by step, with passion and collaboration we will get further.

Hiphonest design is about looking good, doing good and feeling good. We appreciate beautiful, and well-considered design. We create our own values of consuming. And a new personal luxury arises in which nature, art, technology and science are an inexhaustible source for ideas, and possibilities.
Hiphonest and the S-values
Sustainability has become a complex term. And there are huge misunderstandings of the meaning of fair trade, organic, eco etc. Hiphonest design goes further then respect for people and environment only. Designers are connecting new materials, technologies and processes together or collaborating to make new products by engaging different disciplines to work directly together.
Many strategies can be adopted to minimise environmental and social impact within the design and production of fashion. Many different approaches are usefull. Aim of this website is to promote a broad view of hiphonest ideas, issues and opportunities in the fashion, textile and design sector.
To understand this dynamic field of Hiphonest design we divided the approach on sustainability in different S-values. (S-values can overlap eachother)

Statements & Signs

In ‘our world in transition’ we need statements, eye-openers and reality checks. If you walk around with a calm state of mind, you can find ‘Signs’ of change everywhere. On the street, a crazy youtube movie, a student project etc.
Hiphonest inspirator Katherine Hamnett made her statement on society already years ago with her slogan T-shirts.
More Statements and Signs.
Social, Surroundings & Sincere

The S-values Social and Surroundings stand for respect for people and planet. Interesting developments in the textile industry are alternatives for regular cotton like these beautifull pictures of Milk Fabric or Pine Tree. Sincere is about transparancy. Hiphonest brand communication is about telling the real story behind the way your products are made. Even when you are not doing 100 % good yet.
SLOW

The current fast fashion industry of cheaper and faster clothes is inherently unsustainable and cannot continue indefinitely. So lets slow down.
Slow design refers to traditional crafts, custom made and customized (Do-It-Yourself).
SHAPE

Designers are looking for new (and old) techniques and design processes to make products more sustainable. Science and lessons by nature are important sources while shaping the future in architecture and design. In the book Cradle to Cradle William McDonough and Michael Braungart are talking about ‘Remaking the Way We Make Things’.
Shape is the starting point for the third edition of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale and is the connecting thread of the greatest cultural fashion event in the world. We definitely need to re-think the way we design and start sourcing for new ways.
SECONDLY

‘Re-think the way we design’ is about the whole life-cycle of a product. S-value Secondly includes recycling, upcycling and re-pairing. Manifesto and exhibition ‘Stop Recycling Start Repairing’ organised by Platform21 will give you a fresh point of view on sustainability.
SCIENCE

Connecting design with science and technology gives us a broad choice of developing new solutions.
