Did you also grew up with those tough transformers? According to the designers of Studio Re-Creation Jennifer Kanary and Nikola Nikolov anyone should give their first car a second life. This art sculpture is created out of their first lada. Mission is to create new objects out of anything that is no longer being used. This week you can admire these Dutch design pieces at the platform Tuttobene during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, the world’s most important design fair.
With “Caleidoscope” product designer Frederike Top indulges in her fascination with light. Though the outside of the lamp looks almost industrial, the inside is a play with light and colors, similar to those of a real kaleidoscope.
Frans Willigers will show his bench for public spaces called “Graffitti” The bench is designed as a stylish “tag” that adds graphic lines to any landscape. Although originally created as street furniture, the design is also suitable for indoor events such as fairs. Currently, the bench is made out of coated waterproof multiplex, but studies show that different materials can be used.
Via a tweet tip from FloorDrees I found this ‘state of the art’ kitchen design ‘Ekokook’ by the French design/research agency The Faltazi Lab. Besides this kitchen looks like a Walhalla, it helps you reducing your ecological footprint. I say let the earthworms begin!!
On engadget.com we can reed: ‘Ekokook is designed to generate essentially zero waste. The solid waste — things like glass — are ground down using a hand-activated steel ball, and there’s also a manual paper shredder which compacts the leftovers into small bricks. Water is stored, filtered, and reused, with waste water being used to water plants. Oh, and there’s also an eco-friendly earthworm compactor in a drawer!’ How this works? Check these visuals!
Ekokook is about implementing a global prospective research project for eco-friendly habitat in the real world: the Faltazi Lab. ‘We are trying to answer the question of how to introduce ecological projects into the home. How to upgrade existing housing without advocating complete reconstruction.’
Rapid Manufacuring
Besides a kitchen The Faltazi Lab researched and designed other products.
These products are made by using the rapid manufacturing proces. To learn more about this just watch this video on YOUTUBE.
Benefit is that these products can be produced locally, so there is no stock, no assembly and minimal transportation. Other winning rapid manufactured designs you can see by FOC. Let’s hope that designs like these will be promoted into the bigger market. PictureJamie Oliver cooking in Ekokook or Desperate Housewives using vacuum cleaners designed by The Faltazi Lab.
Eco-fiber artist and writer Abigail Doan creates recycled fiber forms and textile installations as a means to stimulate dialogue about her own memories of a homespun upbringing on a small family farm and life today navigating the urban landscape. Sustainability is very much a personal issue, and even though there are guidelines for what we must aim to implement and put-into-action, if you do not find a lifestyle that advocates balance and beauty, then a future based on sustainable methods is not really a reality.
I am a farmer and artist at heart, though I began writing about sustainable textiles and fashion as a means to examine the interconnected threads and patterns of our lives that are openly frayed and in need of repair. I make a point of breaking down categories and prejudices when it comes to reviewing design and fashion items, as there is no excuse for a well-made piece being understood by only a handful of folks. Fair and ethical practices are intrinsic to the integrity of any craft or business, and we need to share this message with everyone we meet.
People who do and make things for honest reasons really inspire me. There is, indeed, an interesting global shift occurring right now, as product materials necessitate care and resourcefulness in how they are treated. I believe that style will be increasingly informed by our ability to see into and through everything that we grasp and adorn ourselves with – as we push towards a moment where awareness has a texture and value that is irresistible in its appeal.
Following Horsehair weaver Marianne Kemp, for two years now, still get really excited to see her new admirable designs. Together with felt specialist Anneke van Hoogervorst she created a new series of textiles: horsehair in combination with felt and a new line of Woven Wool. Horsehair has different characteristics compared to wool, for example the shine, strength and touch. Read more @ Materia.nl

'The deeper meaning behind this blog goes back to my personal vision on the world: 'YOI:'
YOI: is based on the ‘bigger picture’ in which we are on our way to a more beautiful and balanced world wherein sustainable thinking, design, fashion, people and business will make the difference.
In terms of the massive and dramatic environmental/ economic crisis that we are facing, this change is absolutely needed.
Basically the essence of this ‘awareness movement’ takes place in the being and hearts of optimistic but critical thinking people.
To define this particular mind shift I gave this the name/brand ‘YOI:’ As it stands therefore, ‘We’ as human beings are in a conscious global transition.' by Annouk Post
